Judging & Awards
All New: Judging procedure has been changed to an OPTIONAL American Idol format. Each performance will receive critiques
in audio recording, written scores and immediate face to face verbal feedback. Awards will be based on score and awarded
immediately. Special awards will be announced at the end specific performance sections.
All performances will be judged on a point system. Three judges with point ranking of a possible
100 points each. Points are delineated as follows:
Scoring Categories
- Fundamentals: Basic knowledge of dance steps within category
- Difficulty: Appropriate amount of dance elements, rhythm, and style. Time compliance
- Technique: Proper execution, timing, completion of movements, memory synchronicity, spacing, posture, poise, hands-arms-feet-legs
- Showmanship: Smile, stage presence, costume, audience appeal, confidence, projection, emotion
- Choreography: Creativity, originality, difficulty, use of floor, use of music, variety/interest, appropriate to age
Scoring Tiers
- Platinum: 290-300
- Dance Spotlight Gold: 275-289
- Gold: 260-274
- Silver: 240-259
- Bronze: 220-239
- “Best Dancing”: 219 and below
Routines should be at least 1 ½ minutes and no more than 3 ½ minutes including entrance and
exit (on and off). Production must be at least 3 minutes and no more than 7 minutes on and off. Ribbons will be
awarded to all dancers. Trophies will be awarded for each adjudicated act based on score. 1st 2nd and 3rd place
will be awarded in each age group and dance category. Solos and Duets will receive trophies for dancers and a 1st
place trophy to studio if there are 5 or more entries. Trios and up will receive studio trophy for 1st 2nd 3rd place
winners; medals will be awarded to each dancer. Student Choreography, Student Theme, Costume and photogenic will
each be awarded a trophy based on score. 1st 2nd and 3rd place will be designated.
Cash Awards
Regionals
Dance Spotlight USA will provide cash awards to the highest overall score in each age division. Must be a minimum
of 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners in at least five performance categories.
- Solo, Duet, Trios: $50 cash *$100 dance studio scholarship to designated dance studio/director
- Ensemble: $100 studio
- Small Group: $150 studio
- Large Group: $200 studio
- Line: $250 studio
Dazzle categories:
- Costume: $50 (photo featured on web site)
- Photogenic: $50 (photo featured on web site)
- Student choreography: $50 cash *$50 dance studio scholarship
- Student theme: *$50 dance studio scholarship
Nationals
Dancers who score in the silver, gold, Dance Spotlight gold or platinum range are eligible to compete in our national
competition! Bronze and “best dancer” category winners are eligible to enter any other qualifying
competition including Last-Chance Dance Spotlight Day, the Wednesday before the National competition. They will
receive a 50% discount for the first re-try.
Dancers who score high platinum at Nationals will perform their winning routine at the Master Dance Pageant the
Saturday evening of Nationals. At this time they will be awarded a Dance Spotlight National Championship Jacket
and receive special recognition!
Dance Spotlight USA will provide cash awards to the highest overall score in each age division. Must be a minimum

- Solo, Duet, Trios: $100 cash *$100 dance studio scholarship to designated dance studio/director
- Ensemble: $200 awarded to studio
- Small Group: $250 studio

- Student choreography: $100 cash *$100 dance studio scholarship
- Student theme: *$100 dance studio scholarship
If you are entered as an independent, a dance studio or dance education camp or conference name must be
submitted for dance scholarship checks to be awarded.
The Master Dance Pageant is an exciting way to showcase Dance Spotlight USA's elite performers. Dancers
who have received a Platinum score on the day of Nationals will perform in a dance production at the end
of the day! Dancers will be given a schedule with order of performance categories which will be updated
as Platinum awards are achieved. Order will coincide with competition schedule order.
